# Average (mean) calculator - Calculate the average or mean of numbers online

The `a`

command calculates the mean or average of numbers and shows the output. If you want to get the average of 3, 4, 5 (= 4), input `a`

and those numbers in the above form as follows.

All numbers should be separated by a comma. In the first place, "mean" or "average" of numbers is the sum of numbers divided by the number of them. In this case, the average of 3, 4, 5 is (3 + 4 + 5) / 3. The mean is similar to the median, or "center value" of numbers. In fact, the mean of them is 4 and those just contain 4, the center of them.

## The average of decimals, fractions and expressions

The `a`

can take not only integers but decimals, fractions and general expressions such as 3.5 and 20/5. The program regards 20/5 as 4 (an integer) and compares three numbers.

The calculator simplifies the expressions like 4 + 5 (= 9) and converts it to the integer or floating point number before comparing all values. In the below example, sin(pi/2) is exactly 1 so the first expression is simplified to 3. Double asterisks means power or exponent.
